In terms of approach, Dawn Of Azazel creates very angular, challenging blackened death that is quite unlike the style of a majority of bands that delve into sonic extremity. This fact is both a strength and a weakness for the group.

While their sound focuses on hyper-rapid rhythms and plenty of stop/start guitar work, there’s a sort of tunnel vision approach to their craft that makes it difficult to take in an entire album in a singular setting. Chaos rules supreme as the band slashes their way through capable tracks like “Swathed In Impurity” and “Villany Endures.”

Following repeated spins, this self-titled record becomes an acquired taste. One must admit, for a trio, the group can certainly create a wall of racket. Harsh screams and violent gear-shifting nicely compliment the aggressive flurries. One must wonder just how devastating a force this group could be if it focused on expanding its vision.

Nevertheless, there are enough outbursts of musical violence herein to satisfy those looking for something that’s a bit more abstract than your everyday bunch of goat-worshipping metal demons.
